Youth trial concludes with conviction

Two youths have been remanded in custody after a jury found them guilty of having an offensive weapon last year, with one of them having also been convicted of theft.

The pair were charged together on three counts following an incident at St. Lawrence Sports and Community Centre on 12 May 2020.

They faced a three-day jury trial this week, which was held at the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RJAHS).

The pair were accused of stealing £380 in the area of the Community Centre. One of the youths admitted the offence at the beginning of the trial, while the other one was unanimously found guilty of it.

The jury also returned a unanimous guilty verdict on the charge of “possession of an offensive weapon”, namely a knife.  

The youths were also facing one count of robbery, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict.

Crown Advocate Simon Thomas was leading the prosecution in the case, with Advocates Sarah Dale and Chris Hillier appearing for the defence.

Both defendants made bail applications which were refused by the Deputy Bailiff, Robert MacRae.

They have been remanded in custody until their sentencing on 12 February.
