Ed Peck, Esports.Je: Five things I LOVE about Jersey

Friday 14 August 2020

A local gamer has taken a step out of the virtual world to share Jersey's best bits - from friendly cows and full fibre to being able to play Pokémon Go at all hours.

Ed Peck is the co-founder of Esports.Je, a Great Union Street-based gaming centre which regularly hosts local competitions and tournaments.

Here's what he had to say...

1. Disconnected physically, but connected digitally

I love how good our digital connection services are in Jersey. The fact that almost all our homes have Gigabit fibre is something I think so many of us take for granted.

I hear horror stories of people who still have to wait for YouTube videos to load, it all seems so archaic to me now. Our mobile network coverage is excellent as well, allowing us to always be connected - battery providing at least!

2. Feeling safe

I spend a lot of time walking around playing Pokémon Go, but because of the timezone difference between us and California, the bigger updates for the game tend to come out at 21:00 local time.

In most places you'd have to wait until morning to enjoy the new features, but thankfully we live in an island that has a comparatively low crime rate, so I feel safe walking around even during the later hours of the night. I'm not sure I could say the same about some of the cities I've been to!

3. Our legen-dairy cows

How cool are Jersey cows? They're super friendly, you're never far from a field full of them and they're often social enough to come up and greet you.

Potatoes are cool and all, but I'm so glad our island is known globally for our four-legged, high in butterfat, golden brown friends. Also, the Jersey Dairy ice cream is on point!

4. How close we all are

I guess it's a Jersey thing, but the idea of commuting more than an hour to work for people in the mainland and other locations seems mad to me. You can get from one end of the island to the other in less than an hour! At least, if you don't get stuck in traffic.

We have such short journey times each day, the only people it negatively impacts are those wanting to listen to long podcasts.

5. Pockets of communities

One of the coolest things about running Esports.je is that we get to meet people from so many different gaming communities.

The FIFA guys are totally different to the World of Warcraft guys, so being the host of events means you really get to meet all kinds of amazing and diverse people - it's one of the best parts of the job for me.

Jersey has some real talent as well, hopefully we can continue to assist in tournaments to really help them move up to the next level and show the world what Jersey has to offer.
