Rozelle Sutherland MBE, Refuge Founder: Five things I LOVE about Jersey

Friday 22 January 2021

The compassionate brains behind the Jersey Women's Refuge has opened up about the things she loves most about living in Jersey.

Rozelle Sutherland (86) not only helped establish Jersey Women's Refuge in 1988 but also held a voluntary supervisory role for close to 30 years, a dedication which was recognised through an MBE in 2010.

She was recently selected by Soroptimists International as one of more than 100 members to be celebrated as part of the '#WhoIsShe?' campaign, which marks the organisation's first centenary.

She is one of only four people who has been a member of the Club for more than 50 years and is described as an inspiration.

A photograph of Rozelle will be on the Soroptimist Centenary website until the end of the month, along with information about her "tireless work" in relation to the establishment and support of the Jersey Women’s Refuge since 1983.

For Express, Rozelle has shared five things she loves about the island...

1. Kindness of people

Pictured: One of Rozelle's favourite things in the island is the kindness of islanders.

We at Jersey Women's Refuge have had so many expressions of support and donations over the past year, such kindness to those needing help.

Staff and volunteers, all ready to support the women and children, too.

2. Country lanes

Pictured: Country lanes are a "walking heaven" for Rozelle.

Peaceful and unspoilt, though we have so much traffic! Walking heaven.

3. Beaches

Pictured: With so many beaches in the island, it is easy to find the "perfect spot".

So many, all different, one can always find the perfect spot.

4. Jersey Royals

Pictured: Our Jersey Royals are "perfectly delicious".

Perfectly delicious.

5. Jersey Arts Centre

Pictured: Rozelle thinks Jersey is "truly fortunate" to have the Arts Centre.

Plays, Music, Films, Art, Dance, good food, companionship - we are truly fortunate.
