Have you heard about #manifesting?

Thursday 30 December 2021

With 2022 now in all our thoughts, are you looking ahead to the year positively or negatively? If the former, is it possible that simply by thinking positively, you can help good things to happen?

Here, Express columnist Martha MacDonald dissects the term #manifesting - essentially, it means that you are what you think...

#Manifesting is everywhere right now. Everyone’s talking about it! Heck, even I’m talking about it (and that’s how you know for sure that it’s super trendy – you’re welcome!)

Now to the small matter of what on this good Earth #manifesting actually means. Essentially, it’s a way of making manifest something that was previously only an abstract concept to you. See, completely self-explanatory, right?!

Er, on second thoughts, maybe let’s go over it one more time...

So, #manifesting is a process based on the notion that you can bring about positive change in your life – whether that’s emotional, professional, romantic – by attracting those things to you and believing they will come to you. It’s this idea that if you claim what you want by repeatedly vocalising your desires and inviting these things into your life – they will eventually become real.

Even as I type this, I’m fully aware of how bizarre it sounds. I’m imagining all my hordes of fans picking up their copy of CONNECT magazine (as, of course, they do as soon as the new edition has dropped), flicking immediately to ‘Have You Heard?’ (as, of course, they do every month, like clockwork) begin reading these words and gradually their face crumples into a crestfallen scowl:

“My favourite ever columnist and hero who really should be up for a Pulitzer Prize, CONNECT magazine’s own Martha MacDonald no less, has succumbed to this drivel?!” This they would cry to no one in particular, brandishing their edition of the Channel Island business magazine and weeping hot, plump tears into the cold concrete of St. Helier.

I can totally imagine that’s how you’re feeling in this moment. I get it. I understand. But, kindly, let me finish.

Obviously, it would be hugely problematic to suggest that people can alter their lives just by thinking positively. People are dealt awful, inexplicably tragic cards in life and it’s not right to suggest that this could ever be altered through the ‘power of positive thinking’ – I mean, give me a break.

HOWEVER, and it’s a BIG HOWEVER, I do think that there is something to be said about reflecting on what it is that you would like to come your way: whether that’s professional aspirations, lifestyle goals, or anything else.

I think it’s so good and healthy to check in with yourself and make sure you’re on the right path. Are you heading in the right direction to achieve what you’re aiming towards? What kind of a life do you want to lead? Is it possible to manifest owning a property when you have £8.50 in your bank account and the housing market is completely wrecked? And so on and so forth...

So, my advice to you is definitely give #manifesting a go and see how it makes you feel if you fancy it, but please proceed with caution and ensure you’re all stocked up on the following VERY IMPORTANT items before you try it:

  • 1 x sense of humour
  • 1 x massive pinch of salt

And you’re all good to go! Happy #manifesting!
