READER LETTER: "I don't think I have ever been so torn"

Monday 09 November 2020

Ahead of this week's vote of no confidence debate this week, a reader has written to Express to call for action from the Chief Minister.

"I have just finished reading P149/2020, Senator Kristina Moore's VONC against the Chief Minister, and I have to say that I don't think I have ever been so torn.

On one hand, I wholeheartedly agree with much of what Senator Moore says about the island losing confidence with this Government as Senator Le Fondré has failed time and time again to properly hold the CEO to account.

On the other hand, I still believe that Senator Le Fondré is an honest and honourable man, albeit, sadly, rather weak and is allowing Charlie Parker to walk all over him.

The comment concerning the CEO's additional role at New River, 'After listening to his comments, the Council continues to assert that the non-executive role is not compatible with his duties as Chief Executive at this time', is quite alarming. This is not compatible at ANY time.

The SEB is the employer for all Government employees and is reliant on the Jersey Appointment Commission for sourcing and securing suitable staff, conducting interviews, doing background checks, highlighting conflicts of interest and so on. In many cases, this is not being done according to the law and all should be held to account.  There needs to be a full inquiry on this.

Charlie Parker has brought in, or allowed his DGs to bring in, multiple members of staff whose jobs have not been advertised or who have been considerably conflicted. This should not only apply to permanent staff but those on temporary contracts too.

If ever there was a time that the Chief Minister needed to prove who is running the island, this is it.

The time for action is now."
