OLYMPIC FIX: From rowing...to skateboarding...and rock climbing!

Tuesday 23 July 2024

There's only one day to go until the opening ceremony of Paris 2024!

Counting down to the big day, Express has this week been taking a look at each of the sports that will be on display – and shining a light on the different clubs and groups available in Jersey for anyone inspired by the Olympians.

Welcome to the fourth instalment of OLYMPIC FIX.

Yesterday, we covered everything from diving to judo.

The sports on today's agenda are...

The Jersey Rowing Club is the island's main rowing organisation that offers a full calendar of coastal events around Jersey, as well as Guernsey, the UK, and France.

Part of the JRC is a girls only team, Girls That Row, who likewise compete in international events at a very high level.

Anyone can join the Jersey Rowing Club. For more information, send an email.

Rugby

Rugby will be showcased at Paris 2024 – but not in its usual form.

Rugby Sevens – where teams of seven players play seven-minute halves – will be on our screens instead of the usual teams of 15 that you see in Six Nations Championship.

The Jersey Rugby community is strong, with the Jersey Rugby Club competing in events all-year-round with its Senior Men, Senior Women and Minis teams.

Additionally, if you're looking for something more casual then the Royals RFC always welcome new players. With pre-season in full-swing, it's the perfect time to register!

Alternatively, if contact rugby is not your thing, then perhaps try Jersey Touch Rugby. They're always looking for players, so why not get in... touch

Sailing

Jersey's an ideal place to learn to sail.

Offering multiple courses through their RYA training centre, Go-Sail.je is a great place for anyone looking to further their boating skills.

Additionally, St Catherines Sailing Club caters for wannabe sailors of all ages.

As well as year-round competitions and qualifications, they are running an 'Adults, Family and Teens' course this summer which you can book through their website HERE.

Shooting

Shooting is another popular sport in Jersey – one which has previously led to Island Games medals.

Offering safe and professional smallbore and fullbore rifle shooting, pistol and air rifle shooting classes and leagues in clubs around the island, The Jersey Smallbore Shooting Association and The Jersey Rifle Association are the governing bodies of the sport.

Why not give it a.... shot

Skateboarding

Returning to the Olympic stage this year for the second time is skateboarding. Jersey is lucky to have a brand new facility at Les Quennevais, which is free to use for the public and can accommodate scooters, BMX and skateboarding fans around the island.

Other facilities, also free to use, are located in town by the Esplanade, in St John's near the community centre and a minis ramp at St Ouen's youth centre.

Skateboard Jersey offer professional lessons and 1-1 sessions, they also host free girls-only events and much more for anyone who wants to have a go.

Climbing

Paris 2024 will include a fast-paced climbing event. If you like the look of it, the best place in Jersey is The Jersey Rock Climbing Club.

Operating year round, they scale many of the challenging coastal and cliff faces as well as indoor climbing events during the winter.

New members are welcomed for just £15, and the club provides all required safety equipment for each session.

Surfing

The Channel Islands Surfing Federation governs the surf clubs in Jersey and Guernsey, including the Jersey Surfboard Club – the longest running surf club in Europe.

They also cover bodyboarding and longboarding clubs in the island and welcome anyone interested in the sport to get in touch.

Additionally, Jersey boasts plenty of surf schools – all based in St Ouen's Bay – for weekends and school holidays such as Laneez and Le Port.
