Monday 01 July 2024

A squad of 11-to-13-year-old girls will make history this month by becoming the first team to represent Jersey in the largest youth football festival in the world.

The Jersey Wanderers Football Club's under-13 girls team is set to travel to Sweden to compete in the Gothia Cup competition from 14-20 July.

As the largest youth football festival in the world, the tournament welcomes over 1900 teams from 70 countries every year.

With just two weeks until this year's event, the Jersey girls have been working hard to prepare.

Set to compete against 53 other teams from 13 different countries in their age group, it will be a big moment for the squad and their four coaches.

The team will be proudly waving the Jersey flag at the opening ceremony to an audience of 55,000 people.

Coach Kaspar Wimberley said: “The girls have worked so hard on and off the pitch in anticipation of this fantastic footballing experience.

"We have just two training sessions left before we leave for Sweden and we couldn’t be more ready to create lifelong memories as a squad!”

Whilst in Sweden, the young team will also have the chance to watch England's Lionesses play Sweden in the European Qualifiers on 16 July.
