A man who wanted to complete the 30 Bays challenge in just one day has smashed his fundraising target for Les Bourgs Hospice.

Matt Holland’s mum, Sam Holland was cared for by the team at Les Bourgs Hospice before her death earlier this year.

He wanted to do something to give back to the hospice, he said.

“Les Bourgs Hospice hold a place close to my heart due to the role they held in caring for my mum in the last few months of her battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND),” he said.

“They dramatically improved her quality of life and without them, we would not have had the time as a family we so very needed. It’s not just the facilities behind Les Bourgs, but the people. The Nurses, healthcare assistants and volunteers all bring happiness and comfort to people going through some of the toughest moments in their lives.”

Matt started his 30 Bays in 1 Day challenge at the Bathing Pools on Monday morning. He ran between bays, clocking up 50km on the roads as well as a minimum of thirty swimming strokes in the water at each stop.

He was joined by Ellie Tanguy for the challenge.

She had been involved in Mrs Holland’s care, both in the community and at the Hospice.

“The Holland family are amazing and Sam left a huge stamp on everyone’s hearts, may she live on in the songs we hear and the legacy she left behind of being fiercely herself no matter the bumpy road life can be!”

Mrs Holland loved sea swimming herself, and Matt was joined by other family members for their final dip at Fermain on Monday evening.

He had hoped to raise £1,000 for Les Bourgs Hospice through his 30 Bays in 1 Day challenge, but at the time of writing he has amassed nearly £4,000 in donations.

Liz Stonebridge, the organiser of the 30 Bays challenge for Les Bourgs Hospice, said they are all very grateful for the effort from both Matt and Ellie, and the support from everyone else.

“We are so grateful for Matt and Elouise taking on their own version of the challenge and being so passionate about Les Bourgs Hospice. It is extra meaningful that Matt’s Mum was cared for here.”

Matt’s donation page remains open at Justgiving.
