The President of the States of Alderney has said he is looking forward to events to mark the 80th anniversary of Homecoming Day.
“I am absolutely delighted to host the visit of H.R.H. The Duchess of Edinburgh on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Homecoming on the 15th of December 2025,” said William Tate.
“The visit underlines both the importance of the occasion and the strong historic bond that exists between Alderney and the Crown,” he added.
Homecoming Day is the date on which the first Alderney people returned home after being evacuated ahead of the Bailiwick’s Occupation 1940.
Around 100 people were on the first boat home.

This year’s events started with yesterday’s tree planting to create a new woodland in the island.
It had been stripped almost bare of anything that could be burnt during the Occupation to be used as fuel by the German soldiers posted there.
Tomorrow’s events include a Royal Visit from the Duchess of Edinburgh.
Mr Tate said his thoughts will be with those who came home 80 years ago, and those who never made it back.
“On the day we recall the debt of gratitude we all owe to the brave souls who never gave up hope that one day they would return to their Island home. They were not daunted by the task they were confronted with. They resolutely faced the challenges committed to repair the damage inflicted during the long years of Occupation.
“Those of us who are privileged to live here stand on their shoulders. The 15th will be a day to remember.”
