On this day in 1949, the then Princess Elizabeth visited Guernsey and officially opened the hospital, which has remained a central part of the island community and is about to undergo a big modernisation project.

After seven decades, this will bring about a number of changes including the relocation of the maternity, paediatric and neonatal units and a new critical care unit.

In celebration of the hospital’s anniversary, Health and Social Care has collated a number of old photos of the PEH and its employees from before and after the German Occupation, as well as audio clips from ex-patients and former staff members.

The exhibition is being opened at 11:00 today by President of HSC Deputy Heidi Soulsby and members of the public are welcome to attend and look back at the history of the hospital.

Between 11:30 and 12:00 there there will be a celebratory service in the Emma Ferbrache room delivered by the Chaplaincy Team. It will feature readings, poetry and a performance from the Hope Choir.
