Earlier this month, it was revealed the blue light service had already responded to more calls this year than it had done throughout the whole of last year, and the year before.

With 5,000 calls during the first 11 months of the year, the St John Emergency Ambulance Service has regularly had to call extra staff in to help out during busy shifts and that happened again over the last few days.
There were 38 calls for emergency crews between 18:00 on Friday and 18:00 on Sunday evening, with 26 of those calls coming in during the 24 hour period between 18:00 on Saturday and the same time yesterday.
A spokesman for the emergency ambulance service said the Saturday night shift alone dealt with 14 of those calls between Saturday and Sunday, with extra staff being called in again to help the duty staff cope during the times of highest demand in the early hours of Sunday and again during Sunday mid-morning.
The spokesman said the weekend’s incidents included both medical and trauma related cases, a road accident and transfers from the PEH to the airport for patients requiring treatment in the UK. “Some of the cases involved patients who were intoxicated,” said the statement.
