Further maintenance work has been carried out to patch up Alderney’s crumbling runway.
Alderney States Member Alex Snowdon told Express that he estimates the work costs up to £600,000 per year.
Matt Capazario, the Head of Airside Operations at Guernsey Ports said the figure is closer to £400,000.
The funding comes from Guernsey Ports which is responsible for managing Alderney Airport, along with Guernsey’s airport and the Bailiwick’s harbours.

“Guernsey Ports closely monitors the condition of the asphalt runway at Alderney Airport and is carrying out a programme of preventative maintenance to minimise potential disruption,” said Mr Capazario.
“A detailed inspection is carried out by pavement specialists every six months, to inform the priorities for the next phase of maintenance. Our contractors the carry out work each spring and autumn. The annual cost of this programme is around £400,000.
“The work undertaken over the last 10 nights involves patching and sealing areas of runway degradation, using specialist patching material commonly used on runways and manoeuvring areas of an aerodrome. These works are scheduled to conclude this evening (Wednesday 21 May).”
The work started on Monday night and has been carried out while the airport was closed.
AmcoGiffen which did the work is “a leading partner in the design and delivery of innovative and complex multi-disciplinary engineering, construction and maintenance services across the transport, energy and environmental sectors”.

States Member Snowdon was able to view the work being done on Monday night, along with other politicians.
“Following a request from the States of Alderney, Guernsey Ports provided Alderney States Members Alex Snowdon, Iain McFarlane, Bill Abel and States of Alderney’s Head of Operations James Robinson with a tour of the site this week while maintenance works were underway,” said Mr Capazario.
