The Island Games Cultural Programme

Guernsey Arts is immensely proud to have led on several Cultural initiatives to run alongside The Natwest Island Games – Guernsey 2023.

Through three projects, Guernsey Arts reached out to all the competing Islands to engage with art organisations, artists, schoolchildren, and the wider communities, The aim was to not only build a programme of initiatives for the games, but also to build deeper relationships to enjoy and benefit from into the future. The three initiatives were :

○ Pocket Island Poetry This challenged poets to paint a picture of their Island through words and has resulted in the production of a 110 page booklet, available in Guernsey as a physical copy or as a download.

○ The Islands Digital Arts Open allowed any digital or digitally recreated artwork to be submitted and will result in an exhibition in the George Crossan gallery in the Market Buildings through the period of the games, and available as a digital exhibition.

○ The Island Games Postcard Competition looked to include our young people. They were asked how they perceived their own homes and allowed us to gain an additional perspective to each Island. A selection of the wonderful postcards have been printed and are available in Guernsey, and all are available to view in the download below.

Guernsey Arts would be delighted to meet with anyone from visiting Islands should you wish to discuss future opportunities in bringing our Islands closer together. All artwork and poems can be viewed here.

Simon Roberts: ‘Between Tides’

‘Between Tides’ is an exceptional exhibition about the Guernsey’s harbours – St Peter Port and St Sampson’s – in which Roberts explores with large format visual tableaux, series of

portraits and videos the notion of territory and identity. Acclaimed UK photographer Simon Roberts completed an artist residency in Guernsey last year, thanks to a collaboration between Guernsey Photography Festival and Guernsey Museums & Galleries.

Mr Roberts witnessed the complex web of occupations and pastimes that the harbours support and was fortunate to have gained access to areas of the ports that the public usually don’t see.

The exhibition runs from 30 June until 28 August at Guernsey Museums and Galleries. Entry is free with a Discovery Pass.
