Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez said it aligns with the Committee’s Climate Change Action Plan.

It comes as ministers in Jersey recently announced an intention to ban disposable vapes. If they do it, it’ll be under the Single Use Plastics Law.

“Frustratingly, banning single-use vapes in Guernsey would be neither quick nor simple, as unlike Jersey and France, we don’t yet have the primary legislation we would need to enable such a decision to be implemented,” said Deputy de Sausmarez.

However, we’ve had some useful dialogue on this specific issue with vaping retailers, Guernsey Waste and members of the public focused on waste reduction.

“In the absence of the necessary legislation, and in acknowledgement of the fact new legislation tends to take years to develop, I suspect the quickest route to a meaningful reduction in single-use vapes in the meantime may be through other routes.

The Committee is interested in, and supportive of, introducing any feasible solution to reduce single-use plastics, whether through government, business or consumers.

The Committee encourages people to dispose or single-use vapes appropriately.

“There is a free drop-off facility at Longue Hougue Household Waste & Recycling Centre which offers a safe way for people to recycle their disposable vapes,” said Deputy de Sausmarez.

When not disposed of correctly, the vapes can be dangerous as the batteries can ignite when compacted.”
