The Guernsey Retail Group says it has welcomed strong and wide-ranging support from election candidates ahead of today’s island wide vote.
In response to its recently published manifesto asking for candidates standing in the election to “bring bold, innovative thinking to support and grow our industry,” the Guernsey Retail Group said 45 have shown recognition of the vital role that shops play in supporting vibrant town and community centres.
GRG said many election candidates have also highlighted the importance of encouraging both shoppers and the States to prioritise buying locally.
“We have been very encouraged by the level of support for the retail sector, with many candidates recognising in particular its contribution to the Guernsey exchequer along with employment, either directly or through ancillary or support services,” said Malcolm Woodhams, Guernsey Retail Group Director.
The concise eight-page manifesto, that can be viewed HERE says that retail is an “everywhere economy”.
It refers to a 2024 retail survey that showed a “substantial desire to shop local” by consumers.

The document emphasises several key priorities it wants the next States to adopt. These include a strategic and collaborative approach to maintaining and enhancing the variety of shops, ensuring a fair and level playing field for local retailers competing against off-island businesses, and enabling every shopper and business to make local purchases their first choice.
“Our States has to lead the way with initiatives to maximise the opportunities for a strong and healthy retail industry, which is fit for Guernsey,” said Mr Woodhams.
“We have been grateful for the many comments of agreement and support received so far from candidates.”
The manifesto also highlights a number of ‘asks’ of politicians like making parking conditions conductive to shopping hours, upgrades to the shopping hub of St Peter Port and The Bridge and schemes to inspire and increase footfall into the key shopping areas.
Mr Woodhams said he’s hopeful that candidates have listened to their ideas and will be helpful if they are elected.
“Many have taken the time to email their opinions and observations on the importance of maintaining an attractive, healthy and appealing Town Centre, along with the Bridge area and other shopping hubs.
“This election presents the perfect opportunity for Deputies to help secure a vibrant and thriving future for Guernsey’s retail sector and help stimulate the local circular economy.”
