A new Chief Officer for Health & Social Care has yet to be appointed despite funding for the post being approved last year.

The States approved an extra £1.1m in repeat funding for the committee last November.

Part of this was to “support delivery of a sustainable healthcare model… and redesign the management structure with the introduction of a Chief Officer, or equivalent, post.”

But Boley Smilie, the States’ CEO, said that decision came before his appointment to the top civil service job and has been reviewed since then.

“Given the scale and complexity of HSC’s responsibilities, I have taken time to consider the best way to strengthen its structure and support,” he told Express.

“I anticipate making a decision on this soon, but I will do so in close collaboration with the new Committee for Health & Social Care to ensure there is alignment with political objectives.”

Mr Smilie took up his post as Chief Executive and Head of the Public Service in January this year.

The States confirmed that no other Chief Officers have been recruited since the 2025 budget was approved last autumn.
