She has called for a year’s delay to the proposed transfer of students to the High School, arguing that it would ”allow St. Sampson’s teaching staff to establish themselves better”. She also said the larger transformation of secondary education – the implementation of which has already been delayed by a year – could better align.
The petition states: “The new school system is not in an adequate place to adapt to the changes proposed in the new model… the recent Ofsted report for St Sampson High school shows the school is not fit for purpose and therefore a delay in the changes would allow the school to implement changes necessary.
“Therefore, the proposal is to allow [La Mare High School] to remain open to intake for 2023 to ensure the staff are fulfilled in their roles as teachers, utilising their capabilities to the full capacity, rather than reducing the number of students and therefore lessons.”

Ms Taylor, a mother of children who currently attend La Mare, added that despite continual reservations about the future schooling model in general, the community has “probably missed the boat” on substantive changes to the island’s education system.
At the time of writing, the petition had racked up 102 signatures.
