On 2 May, Sergejs Buhtijarovs, 43, was seen driving erratically on Forest Road by a member of the public. He was seen heading in the direction of the airport, bouncing off kerbs and swerving across the centre of the road.

A witness took a photograph of his license plate and called the police.

Buhtijarovs was traced back to the Manor Hotel where the car was registered, and police officers went to investigate.

Buhtijarovs was found in his room at the Manor Hotel. An officer tried to arrest Buhtijarovs, but was pushed away, while repeatedly telling him to calm down.

Buhtijarovs kept pushing and was then forcefully taken to the bed to be restrained. The defendant escaped restraint and the Court heard that the officer used pepper spray to get him under control.

Buhtijarovs started kicking and punching the officer, forcing the officer to call for back up before Buhtijarovs was eventually hand cuffed. He was further charged for resisting arrest as a result.

Advocate David Domaille said Buhtijarovs didn’t understand what rights he had when a police officer enters a private property. He said Buhtijarovs was sorry for everything that had happened, including not properly providing a specimen of breath at the police station.

He was sentenced to six weeks in prison for the driving offences and eight weeks for resisting arrest, both to run consecutively.

However, the final 14-week sentence was suspended for two years. He was ordered to pay the officer £200 compensation and was disqualified from driving for five years.
