Sark’s politicians and civil servants could be able to claim reasonable expenses in future for their public duties.

The island’s parliament, Chief Pleas, will decide whether to introduce an expenses policy for the first time at its next meeting on 1 October.

Conseiller John Guille, Chair of Policy & Finance, wants expenses, including food, travel and accommodation costs, to be claimable by all Chief Pleas members, officers and employees.

He added this is a first step to bolster the island’s government with more to come on “communications, IT, procurement and recruitment” to “support public confidence”.

A form has been drawn up by the treasury, along with guidance that “all expenses must be reasonable, necessary and incurred in the course of official duties.”

A breakdown of how much politicians and officials could claim back.

If approved, it would include travel booked in advance through the treasury office, but only for standard class tickets and taxis only if no public transport was available

Accommodation would also need to be booked through the committee office, with only bed and breakfasts permitted.

£10 would be permitted for breakfast, £12.50 for lunch and £25 for dinner.

Alcohol would not be reimbursable.

Claims must be made within 30 days of the expenses being incurred, supported by receipts.

Politicians’ expenses would be published every three months.

Members of Chief Pleas are unpaid.
