More volunteers are still needed to help Guernsey commemorate and celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Occupation.
Members of the public who’d be happy to give up 2.5 hours on the big day itself are needed to help make sure the cavalcade runs smoothly, as well as many of the other events, parades and performances planned to mark the occasion.
A States spokesperson said: “Organisers of Guernsey’s 80th Liberation Day hope to be able to marshal the cavalcade with volunteers but need 70 more community-spirited islanders to help.”
They add that by giving up some time, you’ll end up with one of the best seats to view the celebrations!
“Volunteers will have a front row seat along the cavalcade route to watch the historic vehicles, military vehicles and floats which will parade into Town in the afternoon.
“If you can help, please register, and support efforts to make this historic milestone the biggest and best Liberation celebration yet.”
The Head of Heritage Services and member of the Liberation Day Organising Committee, Helen Glencross, has been working with the Association of Guernsey Charities to coordinate efforts on the day.
“Volunteering for Liberation 80 will make you a part of preserving Guernsey’s heritage and the celebrations on this historic day. We need islanders to help line the cavalcade route to ensure it is safe for the crowds.
“We know people won’t want to give up their whole bank holiday which is why we’re asking for just two and a half hours of people’s time to help make this day the very best it possibly can be.”
