The play park at Delancey Park is to be fenced off permanently in a bid to improve safety for the children using it.

St Sampson’s Douzaine announced the plan this morning, saying the children’s play area will be closed from today while the fences are put in place.

The fences are intended to keep cyclists and dogs out of the play area said the Douzaine, after a number of complaints were raised about both over recent years.

“The Children’s Play Area at Delancey Park will be closed with effect from today 14 April 2025,” they said.

“The closure is to allow a fence to be put in place which will improve safety for users of the play area by excluding dogs and cycles. We have had complaints over the years, and it is hoped that the fence will significantly enhance the facility and improve user experience.”

Today is the first day of the schools’ Easter holidays, but the decision to close the play ground was only communicated with the media at 11:00 today.

The Douzaine said it is hoping the closure will be a short one but it will likely mean the playground doesn’t reopen before the schools go back in two weeks’ time.

“The duration of the closure will be as short as is reasonably practical. The work has been scheduled around the availability of the contractor. It is anticipated that the Play Area will be unavailable for around two weeks.

“In addition, arrangements are to be put in place to restrict vehicular access to the park to prevent damage to the grass and vegetation.

“It is recognised that any closure of the play area is not ideal, but the improvements should be in place for this summer.”
