They are each facing a count of manslaughter through gross negligence because of their alleged involvement in the death of mental health patient Lauren Ellis.

Miss Ellis died at the Oberlands facility in the early hours of 12 October 2017. She was found with a ligature around her neck.

The prosecution case concluded early last week, and the defence case is now proceeding. This week is also expected to see the case come to a close.

At that point, the Jurats will need to decide whether Mr McDermott and Ms Prestidge failing to carry out their assigned 15 minute observation checks led to Ms Ellis’ death.

Lauren Ellis had emotionally unstable personality disorder and was a patient at the Oberlands facility after a voluntary admission.
