Alderney Roots was born from a difficulty in getting fresh organic produce on the island. Initially Sam worked with the Blonde Hedgehog on its kitchen garden, before launching his own community supported agriculture project.

“We are a mixed vegetable market garden, and we grow without chemicals or pesticides,” he said.

“We offer veg box subscriptions and offer a wide array of vegetables to shops and restaurants.

Sam and Rose moved to Alderney six years ago, bringing with them a real love of food.

“We are growing 40 to 50 different varieties throughout the year. So, box members get a real taste of the seasons, if you know what I mean.

“They’ll have all of our early greens, young potatoes, and then in the summer you get more tomatoes and cucumbers, basil, and then winter, you have all your root crops.”

He said they moved to the island after continually visiting on holiday and “hating leaving”.

“I hope that we are ingrained in the community. We have a lot of support from people… we have volunteers now who are helping with our box deliveries.

“Alderney has always had a strong history of growing, much like Guernsey and Jersey, and it felt like maybe that dropped off a bit.

“So, I’m hoping that we can play a small part in bringing that back again.”
