One of the seal pups rescued by the GSPCA has died, nearly four months after it was taken into intensive care by the animal charity.

Blizzard was rescued in December after being spotted in stormy conditions near the shooting range at Port Soif.

Despite the round the clock care offered by the staff and volunteers at the animal shelter, Blizzard died this week.

“We are devastated to report the sad loss of Blizzard the grey seal pup in the early hours of yesterday,” said GSPCA Manager, Steve Byrne.

“The pup received incredible around the clock care and despite a huge range of vet treatments and intensive care as well as moments of hope the poorly pup recently deteriorated and passed to rainbow bridge and all the team are very upset for this sad loss as so much goes into the care of every animal at the GSPCA.”

Blizzard was being cared for alongside other seal pups – including ‘Ice Ice Baby’ and ‘Icicle’ who were recently moved to the next stage of their own rehabilitation, ahead of their expected release.

Three others, who were being cared for at the same time, were recently successfully released back into the wild at Portelet.

Another seal pup, christened ‘Iceberg Lettuce’ by the GSPCA, remains in intensive care at the animal shelter.

“The pup continues to receive specialised support, including assisted feeding and close monitoring, but we are hopeful the pup can move on to the next stage soon,” said the charity.

As always, the GSPCA is appealing for donations to help the team look after the animals in the charity’s care – including whole mackerel and herring to feed the seal pups.

You can also support the GSPCA’s work by donating for the chance to join the team when at a future seal release.

These events are usually done quietly, to ensure the seals can return to the sea at their own pace without large crowds watching. One winner will be announced when all of the donations are confirmed, said Mr Byrne.
