Guernsey’s Scottish Association is set to hold a Burns Night to celebrate the life and works of poet Robert Burns.

The evening will see Scottish pipes and drums played, courtesy of Piping Guernsey, the traditional address to the haggis, Scottish poetry, a three course Scottish meal and ceilidh dancing accompanied by the Thistle Band.

Organiser Gill Mabbett characterised it as “the only event on the island where you can revive your Scottish country dancing skills – or learn them for the first time!” and went on to promise “an evening of fun and lively dancing for all”.

David McGall, President of the Guernsey Scottish Association, added: “Burns Night is more than an event – it’s a tradition that brings together our community to celebrate Scottish culture and the enduring legacy of Robert Burns.

“It’s an evening that combines heritage, music, and camaraderie and we’re delighted to see such strong support again this year, with tables filling fast.”

The evening, sponsored by Titan Wealth, will also host the Bailiff Sir Richard McMahon and Deputy Bailiff Jessica Roland as special guests.

The Guernsey Scottish Association was founded in the wake of the Second World War by native Scots who can come to work on the island, and islanders who had developed ties with the country through the armed forces or having been evacuated to Scotland during the Occupation.

Today, the Association has more than 300 members and seeks to foster interest in, and enjoyment of, Scottish culture across the island.

Traditionally held on the anniversary of the poet’s birthday, this coming Sunday 25 January, the Association will be holding its event at Beau Sejour the following Saturday, 31 January.

Guests can book tables of ten or individually by getting in contact with Audrey Keneally on 07781 124190 or greendays@cwgsy.net.
