The home was originally founded by Edith Renouf MBE in 1914, after she invested her own personal wealth into providing care and support to Guernsey’s elderly residents.
For over a century Le Platon Residential Care Home has been working towards this goal, but now modern pressures are piling up.
It’s been a well discussed topic, with warnings from Policy and Resources over our present day structure of tax being at risk.
Numbers from the States Analytics team help frame the picture even more tangibly, with there being an extra 2,913 residents of Guernsey around retirement age or above when compared to a decade ago with the figures accurate as of December 2023, and 1,241 fewer under the age of 30, over the same period.
So with troubling signs on the horizon when it comes to the make up of Guernsey, how can islanders help make a difference to residential care homes that provide so much?

Hubertus Lau, the Chairman of Le Platon Residential Care Home, said: “We’ve always listened closely to the needs of our community, and each step in our development has been guided by our commitment to serve Guernsey’s elderly with dignity and respect.
“Now, we’re asking our community to join us in this mission. With your support, we can continue to provide and enhance the compassionate care our residents deserve, ensuring that Le Platon remains a place of comfort and belonging for generations to come.”
As a registered charity, Le Platon receives no financial backing from the States and is funded solely through donations, as such the care home are asking that for donations, the public to spread the word, or for individuals to volunteer.
