A planning application notice has been fixed on the main doors to the shop as the managers of the Market Buildings seek permission to divide the existing retail space into two.

hmv clearance

The building has been closed to the public since February when it didn’t open one morning, as its parent company announced a list of closures, which included the Guernsey branch.  That followed a decision by the firm’s administrators after the company was put into voluntary liquidation.

Since then, the journey to clearing the store took months as first a sale was held to clear all of the stock and then all of the fittings, before eventually the Market Buildings had to arrange for the remainder to be cleared as the liquidators wouldn’t take responsibility.

Now, a spokesperson said “the landlord is actively seeking retail occupiers for the unit”.

While no contracts have been signed yet, changes are likely to be made to the retail space to increase its attractiveness to any would-be tenants.

“The planning application, if granted, would give more options for the use of the space and create direct access to traders and the café within the Inner Street. The proposal are sympathetic to the historic nature of the building and seek to enhance the retail experience in the town.”
