Allister Carey is awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to sustainable development in Africa.

Mr Carey launched the Eleanor Foundation in 2012. Its main focus is improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene, principally in Tanzania.

Steve Mauger is awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) for services to Fairtrade in Guernsey.

Mr Mauger first volunteered with Christian organisations 40 years ago. In 2005, he founded Guernsey’s Fairtrade Steering Group, on which he continues to serve.

Government House announced the Honours at 22:30 on New Year’s Eve.

Acting Lieutenant-Governor, Bailiff Richard McMahon, said that Mr Carey and Mr Mauger “are great ambassadors for Guernsey”.

“I am delighted that these selfless islanders have received national recognition for their work,” said Mr McMahon.

“At a time when the public health situation has led us to focus on our own challenges here in Guernsey, their remarkable achievements are a reminder to us all of the many people around the world who are much less fortunate than we are.

“There are also some echoes from history in these awards. Guernsey’s innovative 19th Century coffee trader William Le Lacheur transformed living standards for workers in Costa Rica.

“Like him, Allister and Steve are enabling people in the developing world to help themselves and, between them, have already improved the life chances of a considerably greater number of people worldwide than the population of the Bailiwick.”

Mr Carey and Mr Mauger will be invited to receive their Honours at some point in 2022. They will also be invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate their awards.

Honours have been awarded on almost every New Year for 130 years.

More information about nominating local people for Honours is available HERE on the Government House website.
