The annual Service of Remembrance for those who lost their lives in Alderney during the Occupation is being held this weekend.

The service will be held at the Hammond Memorial from 16:00 on Sunday 18 May.

The Hammond Memorial was built by local residents on their return to Alderney after the war to commemorate the slaves and forced labourers brought to Alderney by the Nazis.

All faiths on Alderney will be represented at the service, along with members of the community and young people from St Anne’s school.

Attending the Service this Sunday will also be representatives of the Collectif Saint-Jean which recently requested a plaque be laid to honour the residents of Marseille, who were rounded up in January 1943, and transported to Alderney. A representative of the Association will lay a wreath in their memory.

“It is an opportunity to reflect upon the hardship and the suffering of those whose lives were cut short by the cruelties at the hands of the occupying forces,” said William Tate, President of the States of Alderney.
