People who are unable to access traditional bank accounts can now use a prepaid card service offering flexibility and independence that was previously out of reach for some.
Guernsey Community Savings has transitioned its prepaid card services to allpay, a UK-based payment specialist.
The charity says the new system allows for 24/7 online portal access to check balances and transaction history.
It also means users can be paid their wages through BACS, which is a standard, secure electronic system for transferring money between bank accounts, and allay gives the option to set up direct debits.
Support is also available through a call centre during the week and on Saturday mornings.
The charity has also been able to lower the eligibility age to 16 to help younger people who are reliant on its services to build financial resilience.
GCS Chief Executive Joe Brown said the move away from the previous provider, VFX mimoney, was a success.
“Working in close partnership with allpay, we’ve delivered a smooth and reassuring transition from VFX mimoney for our clients.
“It’s been a pleasure to meet every client face to face to complete the necessary paperwork and issue new cards.”
He added that the launch of the new service had “initially limited a small number of transactions”, due to the “enhanced security features of the new platform”.
Mr Brown said “overall, the transition has been very successful,” and noted that the charity is “delighted with both the outcome and the collaborative approach taken”.

GCS founder Peter Neville acknowledged the foundational role played the former provider had played but said it is good news that a new service has been adopted which will suit service users.
“We are very grateful to Nick England, chair of VFX Financial, and until recently a member of our Board. Without his support and hard work, we would never have got Guernsey Community Savings off the ground.
“Over the past five years, we have been able to provide life-changing support to 200 clients — something we are immensely proud of.”
Michelle Pacey, Managing Director of the charity’s new card provider said the partnership focuses on providing practical, user-friendly solutions for financial inclusion.
“Financial inclusion is most effective when solutions are practical, supportive and designed with the end user in mind. Guernsey Community Savings does vital work in the community, and we’re proud to support its move to a more flexible prepaid card service.
“By giving clients greater independence and choice at no additional cost, this partnership helps ensure more people can manage their money in a way that suits them.”
