Steve Byrne said there may have been an oil spill or stormy weather has disturbed oil already on the sea beds around Guernsey.

He said the Harbour Master, States Vet and Environment Officer are all aware and keeping an eye on the coastline.

One bird, a guillemot was found at Saints Bay over the weekend, while two more were found at Grandes Rocque and Vazon yesterday.

The bird found at Saints Bay sadly died, while of the two found yesterday, George who was found at Vazon was extremely sick and as well as being covered in oil, he suffered a prolapse and the vets were unable to save him.

Ger, who was found at Grandes Rocques is also extremely poorly but the GSPCA team are “doing all they can to help.”

Meanwhile Oscar, the fourth, was found at L’Islet late yesterday, and a fifth bird was found already deceased.

GSPCA Manager Mr Byrne said: “We are doing all we can for ‘Ger’ the oiled guillemot that was rescued last night (Tuesday).

“Sadly the oiled guillemot rescued this morning (Tuesday) had multiple health problems including a prolapse and the vets couldn’t help ‘George’ as we called him.

“This means we have had three oiled birds in three days, two from the west coast and one from the south and we would ask all islanders to please watch for others along our coast.

“If you see an oiled bird please call us immediately as if you try to chase and catch it they will often try and make it back out to sea.”

The GSPCA emergency helpline is manned 24 hours a day and can be called on 257261.
