Olio volunteers work with supermarkets throughout the year to collect food which is still on the shelves by its use by or best before date. They then use the Olio App to distribute the food within the community.

For the past two years, they have arranged a collection event on Christmas Eve for people to pick up food for the holiday season when they are often feeding family and friends and when food costs for some may be even more onerous than normal.

Kim Marquis, an Olio volunteer, said this year’s event proved the App is growing in popularity.

“The pop-up was a fantastic success,” she said.

“This is the third year we have done this but it has been the busiest one yet. We will certainly be repeating it next year.”

For anyone who has not yet used Olio, Mrs Marquis said that all it requires is to download the App or search olioex.com online – or click HERE.

Mrs Marquis said that Olio need additional volunteers to collect food from supermarkets and upload the details to the Olio server so that users know what is available for collection. Volunteers can do either weekly or one-off collections.

Anyone interested in volunteering can read more about it on the Olio App or website or the Olio Guernsey Facebook page.
