Guernsey’s Sixth Form Centre is moving to a “temporary home” at the La Mare de Carteret site in the Castel, in September this year.
In announcing the plans, the States of Guernsey add that this is aiming to create a distinct, adult-focused academic environment for post-16 students.
In total, £283,000 in funding has been approved for renovations, which involve converting existing spaces into a university-style lecture theatre and independent study areas. The works will also see an enhancing of IT facilities, and creating modern, professional communal spaces.
The States claim that the project has involved “significant input” from students and the new Governance Board.
The Centre is also actively seeking community support and collaborations, (e.g., donations, and mentoring), to enhance the offering, and in preparing for its eventual long-term move to the Les Ozouets campus.
Kieran James, the Principal of the Sixth Form Centre said; “As we establish Guernsey’s first standalone Sixth Form Centre at Cobo, we have taken the opportunity to create an environment designed to support our young adults as they take the next step in their academic and personal growth. The space will reflect how post-16 education is evolving, here in Guernsey and globally.
“With flexible workspaces, a more adult look and feel, and a real sense of student ownership, it will feel more like stepping into a campus or workplace than a school, and I look forward to inviting members of our community through its doors when it’s ready.”
Meanwhile Tim Langlois, the Community Governor for the Sixth Form Centre added; “This is an exciting time for students and teachers as they move to their new home at Cobo in September.
“As a School Governor and parent with a child in the Sixth Form and another that will join in two years, I see this as a positive step in the right direction for higher education and a great opportunity for growth and development of our future workforce.
“From conversations with students and teachers, it’s clear that there is a buzz and excitement about this move to be an independent Sixth Form Centre and have their own home. This is just the next chapter in the Sixth Form Centre’s journey, paving the way for future developments at their final home at the Les Ozouets campus.”
On the topic of education in Guernsey, works are also taking place this summer on Les Varendes High School, which you can read more about HERE.
