On 20 March the BDCC added 48 properties to the Register of Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments. It followed a consultation held in December 2022.
The decision to list the buildings in the St Anne Conservation Area wasn’t publicised until August.
Concerns have since been raised by property owners and the Planning Office has investigated the process that led to the buildings being listed.
During that investigation a number of procedural and administrative errors were discovered “which taken collectively call into question whether the process was fair” according to the States of Alderney.
The process has been paused while a decision is made on whether to restart the whole process.
“It appears our customer service was inadequate at the time due to a number of contributing factors. It has transpired that perfectly reasonable enquiries made at the turn of the year were not responded to in an efficient and timely manner, which is obviously a source of regret for those now having to deal with this,” said Kevin Gentle, Chair of the BDCC.
“I therefore apologise on behalf of all involved.”
