The Health Improvement Commission collected the views of some pupils who attend school in St Peter Port. During a walk around the parish, the group had many ideas which were noted and prioritised on their return to school.

The main concern raised by pupils were the cobbles, and it was ‘unfair’ that some people had limited access to St Peter Port. The group mentioned that wheelchair users and those with hidden disabilities may struggle getting around Guernsey’s town.

A report by the Health Improvement Commission stated: “It was interesting to see a young generation caring so much about access needs that they prioritised this over things such as space to play.”

Of second importance, the children stressed the need for grassy open areas and suggested that Mignot Plateau would be an excellent community space. Other improvements on par with this included more smoke-free areas, interactive water features and nature-focused trails.

Pupils involved in this activity are part of the school’s ‘Rights Respecting Group,’ a UNICEF scheme promoting children’s rights and making positive impacts on the community.
