Just under 8% of people who responded to the poll said no they would not support the further exploratory work.

With more than 92% saying they would support additional research into these areas, Deputy Carl Meerveld’s view that the public would support his suggestion for more exploratory work appears to be correct.

Deputy Meerveld and 14 have spent time discussing and researching different ways of producing power using the tidal, solar and wind energy around us.

Three reports were released this week – two shorter documents looking at the possibilities of using solar or tidal power, and a much more detailed, lengthier report looking at wind energy.

The reports on tidal and solar power can be read here:

The scoping report on wind energy is too large to upload but Deputy Meerveld outlines what it contains here:

Deputy Meerveld told Express that Guernsey should capitalise on wind energy by installing turbines on the horizon to the south or west of the island.

He said this could raise hundreds of millions pounds in revenue for Guernsey, while not costing us anything, if it is tackled correctly.

Since publishing his report he has said he is willing to stake his personal political reputation on the topic and that he wants to see progress on this within the next couple of years.

He acknowledges that some pushback may be experienced from other States members, and members of the public, so one thing he wants to do early on in the process is establish public support for exploring options – not the detailed plans but just whether or not there should be exploratory work to establish if there is a public desire to look into renewable energy opportunities.
