A new monthly support group is launching in Guernsey to support working mums after their maternity leave has finished.

The new group will be open to anyone with children up to the age of three.

‘Rooted and Rising’ is all about building connections and reducing isolation for working mothers across all professions, said the organisers.

They are Jessica Robinson and Camilla Hobbs, both lawyers at the firm Walkers which is sponsoring the group and providing administrative assistance.

“Guernsey has a brilliant range of groups for mums on maternity leave,” said Ms Robinson. “On returning to work, it is easy to be cut off from these support networks, making what is already a difficult transaction harder.

“Our aim is to provide a space for mums to connect, share experiences and access expert guidance.”

Ms Hobbs added: “Making the adjustment back to working life is difficult to do without proper support and understanding.

“Our aim in setting up this group is to help create that missing support network for mums in an accessible space for those with busy working lives.”

The first session is taking place on Monday 26 January between 13:00 and 14:00 in the Dorey Room at the Guille-Allès Library.

It’s open to all working mothers with no need to register in advance.

The monthly lunchtime sessions will be run by the Bright Beginnings Children’s Charity and will include peer discussions and practical advice.

Specific sessions will feature guest professionals, including health visitors and women’s physiotherapists.

Bright Beginnings said providing a safe space for parents during the early years of childhood is essential for meaningful connection and practical support.

“We see every day how important it is for parents to have a safe and supportive space, especially during the early years,” said a spokesperson.

“Rooted and Rising brings mums together at a time when connection really matters, and we are pleased to help guide those conversations and offer practical support.”
