Anyone with a spare room in their home is invited to help tackle homelessness this winter.

The Supported Lodgings scheme is launching this month – with Resident Landlords being signed up to offer temporary homes to people in need of a safe place to sleep.

Organised by the recently formed charity ‘At Home in Guernsey’ the scheme is looking to transform underused spare rooms into safe, stable, and supportive temporary homes for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, said CEO Charlie Cox.

Together, we can turn spare rooms into stepping stones out of homelessness

The idea is based on the work of UK charity Housing Justice, which is a community-powered model offering a trauma-informed alternative to traditional accommodation.

Unlike conventional hosting, Resident Landlords will receive rent from Lodgers, creating a sustainable and scalable solution that benefits both parties, said Ms Cox.

An information morning on Saturday 13 December, at Specsavers at La Villiaze, will share more information with those who are interested.

Landlords can benefit from training and ongoing support, as well as receiving up to £10,000 tax free rental income per year.

Overall, the scheme will help to reduce homelessness and housing insecurity in Guernsey, build stronger community connections and resilience, and make a lasting impact on someone’s journey toward independence.

“This informal session will explain how the scheme works, what support is available, and answer any questions you may have,” said Ms Cox.

“Whether you’re curious or ready to take the next step, we’d love to meet you.”
