It’s been proposed that Guernsey’s maximum taxi fares go up by 3.5% from Monday 24 November.

The Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure has suggested the change, saying it would add around 80p to a five mile journey during the evening.

Shorter journeys of around two miles during the day time would cost around 40p more under the proposed new tariffs.

Other increases would depend on tariff and based on the number of passengers, day, time and length of the journey said E&I.

A specific change to the 60p supplement charged on Sundays is also proposed with E&I suggesting it goes up to £2. It says the current 60p supplement hasn’t been updated for more than 20 years.

Other taxi fares were last increased in November 2024, when they went up by slightly more than is proposed for this year.

This year’s proposed increase of 3.5% is inline with inflation – and has been calculated using the ‘Halcrow Formula’ which E&I uses regularly to set taxi fares.

The ‘industry accepted method’ takes into account the main costs associated with operating a taxi, says the committee.

Anyone who wants to comment on the proposed changes has until 17:00 on 19 November to do so.
