Guernsey Conservation Volunteers are working hard in Bluebell Wood to try and stop the spread of invasive ‘Stinking Onions’.

The GCV are looking for new volunteers to help with the annual campaign to protect the special site from the spread of the invasive non-native Allium triquetrum.

They threaten the delicate ecosystem of the woodland, outcompeting the native Bluebells that previously carpeted the area.

Over the past three years the GCV has led a dedicated effort to remove the invasive plants.

The project, which runs throughout October and November, has seen many, many thousands of bulbs removed with estimates putting the total at more than 400,000 to date.

“These plants were introduced to Guernsey in the 1840s and have since taken over large areas of the wood,” said Angela Salmon, Operations Director of GCV. “If left unchecked, they would completely dominate the landscape, turning the vibrant Bluebell carpet into a sea of white flowers.”

The results of the removal efforts have been encouraging, said Ms Salmon.

In a monitored trial patch, the number of Bluebell stems with seed pods has increased from just 62 in 2023 to over 260 earlier this year.

This growth signals a promising recovery for the native flora she added, although Bluebells are slow to mature and flower with each seed taking 5-7 years before flowering for the first time.

“Bluebell Wood is a cherished natural space for locals and visitors alike,” said Ms Salmon.

“GCV is committed to continuing this work for at least five years, after which we’ll assess the long-term impact. But already, we’re seeing that our efforts are making a real difference.”

To continue making a difference, the GCV needs more volunteers.

Each work party usually involves about 15 people and takes around two hours to clear a small patch.

The Stinking Onion bulbs are gently removed with trowels, put into tubs and taken off site.

The initiative has also attracted support from many corporate groups and the wider community, with hundreds of people contributing their time and energy to the cause.

Ms Salmon said anyone interested in helping the GCV in Bluebell Wood can join their work parties or learn more about their projects by visiting their website HERE.
