The copper broadband network will slowly start to switch off from this month onwards as the completion of the new fibre network draws closer.

Guernsey Fibre said two thirds of properties have now been connected to the network, with 93% fibre-ready.

This covers over 20,000 properties and all households should be ready to connect next year.

Households which haven’t yet switched from copper to fibre are advised to do so as soon as possible ahead of copper services being discontinued.

The company, an arm of sure which is leading the rollout across the island, said the copper would be switched off in stages from this month and into 2026.

Any homes yet to make the switch, and which will imminently be disconnected from copper, will receive up to three visits from Changeover Officers and three letters explaining the change and offering assistance to move to fibre.

Fibre will become necessary for anyone wanting to use landline or broadband services, after a £37.5m investment with £12.5m coming from the States of Guernsey.

Cyrille Joffre, who leads the fibre rollout, said “the old copper network is being retired, so it’s vital that everyone – even landline-only customers – switches to fibre to stay connected.

“The team has worked tremendously hard to deliver a world-class fibre network to the island on time and on budget, and we’re now on the home straight – which is fantastic for Guernsey’s connectivity and customers’ increasingly digital lives.

“Fibre delivers consistently fast, reliable speeds up to 2Gbps, so there are options to suit every home and lifestyle.”
