The accident happened at around 23:00 on the Albert Pier on Saturday 8 September.

A Guernsey Police spokesman said the man, in his 40s, was believed to be walking along the Pier when he tripped over the chain fence and fell onto a ramp 30feet below.

A spokesman for St John Ambulance said “due to the nature of the incident, the height involved and the possibility of a back injury, the casualty was immobilized and pain relief was administered.

“The patient was taken on blue lights to the Emergency Department of the PEH.”

The area would have been quite busy on Saturday night with the usual crowds visiting St Peter Port’s bars and restaurants as well as the Proms on the Pier event on the Albert Pier and CI Pride in nearby Market Square.

Guernsey Police said other than this accident it had been a routine weekend for officers with the “usual call outs.”

There had been no other reported problems at either of the events in town.

St John Ambulance said the harbour fall was one of nineteen calls for the nightshift of the Emergency Ambulance Service and one of twenty-seven in a 24 hour period.

“Other incidents included a number of medical emergencies, falls and a call for an injured competitor at the Sand Racing. During this time off duty staff had to be called in to ensure emergency cover was maintained. This is normal practice in such circumstances. SJEAS would like to thank staff who returned to work at this time.”
