A former Victoria College student’s music recently garnered airtime on Radio 1.
Express caught up with 30-year-old Sam Bowen – also known as ‘homemovie’ – about how he got started…
What kind of music do you make and why did you choose that particular style?
I would probably say it’s indie-pop, but quite lo-fi, bedroom – the kind of pop songs that you can tell have a bit more of a homemade feel.
It probably wasn’t a conscious decision, but generally that’s what’s come out over the last few years.
When did you start making music?
It was probably when I was 12 or 13. I just started playing guitar and writing songs on and off.

I’ve got some pretty bad songs from back then, but some from when I was 16 and 17 have stuck around a little bit.
How has your music been received so far?
I’ve got loads of support from Introducing in Jersey, they play stuff quite a lot on Radio Jersey and Radio Guernsey.
Then recently I got an email saying I’d been played on Radio 1 on BBC Introducing with Jess Iszatt.
I was a bit surprised. I had to check it, but yeah – it somehow got into her hands and she decided to play it.
What are your musical aspirations for 2026? What do you hope to achieve before the end of this year?
I’m going to be spending a lot more time doing it, trying to grow the audience – get it out there to more people.
Also, I haven’t played live for a long time, so I want to try and get some gigs in, get a bit of a band together.
