A smart medication device that dispenses medication at scheduled times has been launched in Jersey in a bid to remove the need for multiple daily visits from care staff.
The digital health pilot has received just over £77,500 through Impact Jersey’s Innovation Programme, delivered by Digital Jersey, with additional matched funding from the delivery team.
Delivered by Evondos in collaboration with local GPs, pharmacies and care providers, the ‘Automated Medication Dispensers Project’ will trial an automated medication dispensing system in Islanders’ homes over a ten-month period.
The technology is intended to ensure people who rely on regular medication receive the correct doses at the right time, helping to reduce missed or incorrect medication and remove the need for multiple care staff visits.
The system can also monitor vital signs, including heart rate and SpO2, while connecting with care teams and pharmacies to enable faster responses when support is needed.
The pilot focuses on people who take multiple medications, manage long-term conditions, or require additional support from care providers.
The project will also gather Jersey-specific evidence on clinical outcomes, workforce impact and the cost-effectiveness of healthcare delivery.
Evondos UK managing director Nick Hucker said: “The pilot will explore how technology can improve medication safety while reducing pressure on care services.
“The system is designed to deliver medication accurately, prevent access outside scheduled times, and alert care teams if doses are missed.
“We’re pleased to be working alongside strong local partners across the island, like 4Health and Digital Jersey, to deliver a solution that helps people live more independently.”
The project is the third to receive support through the Innovation Programme, which was established to test and scale innovative solutions to local challenges.
Digital Jersey chief executive Tony Moretta said: “Jersey has a real opportunity to use technology to support more independent living and improve health outcomes for islanders.
“This pilot is a strong example of innovation being applied to a genuine everyday challenge.
“By bringing together healthcare providers, technology specialists and local partners, we can test practical solutions that improve medication adherence, support care teams and help build a more sustainable healthcare system for the future.”
