Additional berthing for leisure vessels will be available in St. Helier Marina thanks to a new pontoon expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Work will start by the end of this month on the L-shaped structure, Port of Jersey has confirmed, with the pontoon having a total length of 100 metres.

The installation may eventually include accommodation pods, which are currently the subject of a planning application.

Head of Maritime Operations Louise Stafford told Connect Magazinethat the ambition was to “attract a different area of the market because there was demand”.

While she admitted Jersey may not have exactly the same “lure” as Monaco due to weather limitations, she said that didn’t preclude the island from being a “good place for overwintering some of these yachts… Jersey is recognised as the the sunniest place in the British Isles, and potentially we can draw on that.”

Asked where the island might look to attract luxury vessels from, she commented: “It’s potentially the UK market, potentially Northern Europe – I suppose maybe becoming ‘their Monaco’, as we are there a bit further south and we can provide a better weather window than what you’d get further north.”

Geomarine has been appointed as Ports of Jersey’s contractor for the pontoon scheme, which covers an area adjacent to the Lifeboat Café, and will include a bridge link to provide access and connections for water and electricity.

Events and Projects Support Manager Kim Galbraith said: “These new pontoons will be a better use of the space, which is currently used to store unused pontoons and a working barge platform.

“It will also benefit the boating community by providing more berthing options and tidying up that area of the marina.”

The work is expected to be completed by November 2023.
