Mr Gallichan was found dead in his home on 30 December, weeks after the fire that gutted the boatyard that he owned which forced the evacuation of part of St Aubin and led to neighbours having to flee their homes in the middle of the night.

Three months later, an Inquest led by Deputy Viscount Mark Harris has concluded that Mr Gallichan committed suicide in his home.

The formal finding of yesterday’s Inquest was: “That in the afternoon of Wednesday, 30 December 2015, he was found self-suspended by an electrical cord from the bannister of the stairs in the hallway of his home, Le Reole, Dunell Road, St Saviour, thereby having taken his own life during the previous couple of days, whilst under investigation for various criminal matters.”

The boatyard was destroyed in a fire in the early hours of 7 December – the threat of fumes from burning fibreglass prompted police to warn people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed.

The Parish Hall was opened early to be used as an evacuation centre for residents.

It took teams of firefighters using four fire engines, an aerial ladder and breathing equipment to bring the blaze under control.
