A local brain cancer patient has set up a support group to remind islanders with the same diagnosis that they are “not alone”.

Sophie Reid has launched the ‘Jersey Brain Tumour Support Group’ as a “safe, supportive space” for Jersey patients, survivors, carers, family members, and friends.

She explained that the motto for her new group is: “You’re not alone – we’re in this together.”

Sophie was diagnosed with a grade three astrocytoma in December 2024 after experiencing an unexpected seizure.

Doctors initially believed that Sophie’s brain tumour was a low-grade glioma, but further investigations concluded that she had an aggressive type of brain cancer.

After undergoing an awake craniotomy and completing 33 sessions of radiotherapy in Southampton, Sophie is now back in Jersey to begin a 12 month course of chemotherapy.

The islander has been sharing her cancer journey online in a bid to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms to look out for, and to educate people on how to advocate for their health.

Sophie has now also launched her in-person support group to connect islanders affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.

“Whether you’re navigating a diagnosis, supporting a loved one, or living through life after treatment, this is a place to share your story, ask questions, exchange advice, and simply be there for one another,” she said.

“Together, we can build a kind and understanding community where no one has to face this journey alone.”
