In an appeal launched on the AJC’s online blog, it says that local charities have lost millions this year, and in real need of support. Earlier this year the Jersey Community Partnership (JCP), said that funding for charities had more than halved because of the virus, while demand for their services had increased.
While the Jersey Funders Group and Bailiff’s Fund have been established to help them continue their work throughout the health emergency, JCP pointed out that this funding was only for those providing services in direct response to the virus crisis.
Meanwhile, charities are also unable to apply for government support if they have already received a grant in advance of the outbreak.
The Head of Jersey Hospice first raised the alarm in Express in March, explaining that the palliative care service, which costs thousands of pounds per day to run, was losing £20,000 a week from the closure of its charity shop alone.

The AJC supports nearly 300 local charities with a wide range of services including funding, training and information, and explain the impact that this appeal could have on boosting the funds available to local charities: “If everyone in Jersey gave just £10 through this scheme then that would be £1 million to charities, who have lost nearly ALL their fundraising for 2020 – the amount lost by all charities is unquantifiable, but it amounts to more than £1 million!”

Islanders can donate directly to a charity by contacting them, or head to the AJC’s website for different ways to donate, either directly to a member charity, to a category of charities or to the AJC itself. All funds received via the categories will be earmarked for use to charities in that category, and all charities will be eligible to apply for other funds donated to the AJC.
