The palliative care charity was among the many to share their highlights and challenges of 2024 – and what their wishes are for the new year…

What have been the highlights of 2024?

One of the major highlights for Jersey Hospice Care this year has been gaining approval to open a third shop (within Holme Grown). This will work alongside our current shops, in St Ouen and town, that’ll provide easier access to our fantastic service to the southeast of the island.

This year, we’ve also had brilliant success with our fundraising events and campaigns, and we’re very proud we continue to provide outstanding care to islanders – with one particular highlight this year when we were able to put together a beautiful wedding in the summer for one of our patients.

What has been the greatest challenge?

Recruitment continues to be one of our challenges. We always strive to recruit qualified nurses with the same values and standards of care we have, so we can continue to deliver the vital services we provide, as well as for some prospective new services we’re planning for 2025.

Fundraising will always be an ongoing challenge – especially as we know demand for our services will only increase with an ageing population. To meet the growing need, we have to get more income from our fundraising and retail sector – and from the Government of Jersey – to achieve financial sustainability.

And what is on your charity’s ‘wish list’ for 2025?

To successfully open our third shop at Holme Grown, providing a ‘go to’ shop – with fashion, accessories, homeware and more – to the southeast of the island.

To continue to grow and evolve our flagship events and offer new, exciting, and meaningful ways for islanders to support their Hospice.
