A 37-year-old man who drove home from the pub after drinking 10 pints of cider has been banned from the roads for three years and sentenced to 120 hours of community service.

Mathew Shaun Du Val arrived at the Royal pub in St Martin at around 14:00 on 30 December last year.

He left at around 19:30 after consuming 10 pints of Magners, with the pub’s landlady refusing to serve him any more.

She then saw him get into his blue Mitsubishi and drive off, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

St Martin Centenier Gordon Jones, prosecuting, said officers arrested Du Val at his home just before 20:00 and took him to the police headquarters.

A breath test gave a reading of 101 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – around three times the legal maximum of 35 micrograms.

Advocate Sarah Dale, defending, said Du Val had no previous convictions and had been “compliant and co-operative”, making a full admission.

“Mr Du Val has frightened himself by his actions,” she said.

“He has now lost his job. That is a very significant punishment in itself.”

Advocate Dale added: “This is not something that will be repeated.”

Relief Magistrate Peter Harris also ordered Du Val to retake his driving test before driving again.
